Australia, Group C Team Preview – FIFA World Cup 2018

Australia - FIFA World Cup Team Preview

Australia scraped into the World Cup after a series of far-flung playoffs and new coach Bert van Marwijk faces a huge challenge to guide the socceroos into the knockout rounds in Russia..

Australia FIFA Ranking : 40

Coach : Bert Van Marwijk

Key Players : Tim Cahill

Australia’s dependence on 38-year old Tim Cahill, the country’s most prolific scorer with 50 goals in 105 appearances. The nation is in need to find new stars, but he (Tim Cahill) remains revered by home fans as a proven big-stage performer.. Cahill, who has scored at each of the last three World Cups, has had little playing time for English Championship side Millwall but, with few other options up front, Van Marwijk can ill afford to overlook him..

The 65 year old, Bert van Marwijk has targeted a spot in the last 16, which would match the Socceroos’ run at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, their best ever performance at the glabal showpiece.. In reality, that would be a stupendous achievement for a team that lacks a single player worthy of the label ‘World Class’..

Previous Tournaments :

Australia have qualified for four World Cups prior to Russia, including the last three. Their best performance was 2006 in Germany. When they reached the last 16. They failed to reach the knockouts in the last two tournaments and in their maiden World Cup in West Germany in 1974..

Prospects :

Bert van Marwijk has set the Socceroos the goal of reaching the last 16 but with no world-class players, it would be an achievement for them to avoid three straight defeats from Group C where they play France, Denmark and Peru..
